Jeff Haagenson brings a diverse musical background to his work at Columbia. He has studied choral music, opera, voice, and guitar and incorporates all of this into classical, traditional, popular, contemporary and jazz styles of music.  Jeff enjoys working with the contemporary worship band and leading the traditional choir.  He considers it a privilege to work behind the scenes to prepare Sunday morning worship services that enhance and support the messages of the day.  He also enjoys preparing the annual Christmas Concerts and special worship services. Jeff has served as a music director at the high school and college levels and is a composer of both classical and contemporary music

In his spare time Jeff loves to practice and play guitar.  He also enjoys biking, skiing and exercising.  Jeff’s wife Anna is also a musician and they frequently perform together.  Jeff also enjoys being active in the lives of his three boys – James, Matthew, and Adam.

Jeff has a Master’s Degree in music from the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Philosophy of Ministry

I am deeply moved by the commandment in scripture to sing to the Lord.  There are many examples of singing and worship in the Bible dating from ancient times, and to this day we are privileged to celebrate in worship as we give God the glory and praise.

My passion is exploring the many styles of music and worship, and to help Christian communities express themselves through the sacred arts.  Imbedded inside of each of us is a means of expression which is unique to each individual, yet as we gather for corporate worship we seek expression appropriate for who we are as a community.

I believe that any type of Christian expression must first of all be theologically sound.  For example, in music the lyrics must be in agreement with Holy Scripture.  Also important is that art and music be accessible and understood.  My desire is to create worship experiences which inspire others to actively participate.

I hope that we can always remember the following:
  • Worship is not focused on ourselves but is focused on honoring and glorifying the Holy Trinity - God the Father, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.
  • Worship is an act of offering our lives.
  • Worship happens not just on Sunday morning, but it is a lifestyle encompassing all that we do.
  • As we open ourselves to God in worship, our lives will be changed by the truth of the Gospel.

My philosophy of ministry is teaching and facilitating worship that involves these principles.  To God be the glory and may we all live lives of grateful response to the One who has saved us.
