Columbia Presbyterian Church
Adult Faith Formation

At Columbia Presbyterian Church, we encourage each person to enter into a life-changing and ongoing relationship with Jesus Christ.  The Adult Ministry Team comes alongside to nurture adults in that life journey, with the goal of maturity in Christ:  “We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ.” (Colossians 1:28)

Bible Class - Led by Al Johnston, Russ Tennant, & Patrick Brockway

This is an exercise in letting God talk to us. It is designed for people who have tried Bible classes and felt like they did not know enough to participate, or who never felt like God was speaking to them. Contact Al Johnston, 509-823-3808, for more information.

 Wednesday Evening

Short Stories of Anton Chekhov: Confronting Life’s Big Moral Questions

6:45 to 8:00—June 13, 20, 27, July 11 and 18

Teacher: Dr. Doug Schaak, English Dept. Chair, Multnomah University

What’s it about: This class will focus on the short stories of Anton Chekhov, the great Russian short story writer and playwright.  We will study one story per week, so the reading will not be heavy.  My expectation is that students will come prepared to give their responses and interpretations of the story under discussion, engaging in a lively exchange on Chekhov’s views of love, marriage, God, human dignity, human accountability, ethical behavior, etc.  Chekhov was a medical doctor by profession, saying famously that medicine was his wife but literature was his mistress.  He writes stories that are easy to enjoy on a surface level but offer much more to those willing to probe.  We will tackle some serious topics but will have a great time along the way, as Chekhov would have wanted.

Who is it for: I would love to invite any and all people who are interested, ranging from those who read good literature regularly to those who have some trepidation about literature but want to give it another shot.  I teach students at Multnomah from all majors/disciplines and enjoy introducing these amazing writers to people who are wary, skeptical, or simply uninformed.  Students will feel welcome and at home in this class no matter their literary background.

Materials needed: Anton Chekhov’s Short Stories, Norton Critical Edition.  A few copies are available for purchase or check out in the CPC Library. Copies can also be purchased online.

Journey

Journey is a great way to learn more about Columbia Presbyterian Church.  Whether you are simply interested in learning more about Columbia or you are contemplating membership, we invite you to join us.

Tim's Bible Club

The New Year is here and you are invited to join Tim Mauer and friends as they read the Bible together in 2018.

Tim has made a new reading list this year.  As before, there will be an Old Testament and New Testament reading each day.  New this year will   include a Psalm every other day.  Also new is a reduced Old Testament reading list to lighten the amount to read each day.  Sundays are a day off to rest or get caught up.

Whether you’ve never read with us, or have joined every year, please join with us in 2018 to meet with God every day and get to know Him better through reading His Word.

Back by popular demand – the daily readings will be available on the CPC app!

If you are interested in joining the club, please sign up in the Gathering Area, or contact Tim Mauer   directly by phone (360-910-7048), or email   This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. And remember our motto -
“We don’t have any meetings or committees - we just read the Bible.”
